Asia’s first Rice Technology Park to be established in Gangavati, Karnataka
The Karnataka Government in the first week of May 2016 decided to establish Asia’s first-ever Rice Technology Park at Gangavati. Besides, a Maize Technology Park will also be established at Ranebennur in Haveri district.

Flying Observatory SOFIA detects Atomic Oxygen in Martian Atmosphere
Atomic Oxygen was detected in the upper layers of the Martian atmosphere known as Mesosphere. This presence of Atomic Oxygen for the first time since the last observation 40 years ago was detected by an instrument onboard the Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).

Sadiq Khan becomes first Muslim mayor of London
The British Labour party’s Sadiq Khan on 6 May 2016 was elected new Mayor of London. His election as Mayor of London made him the first actively affiliated Muslim to become mayor of a major Western capital.
Khan emerged victorious in the 2016 mayoral elections after defeating Conservative Member of Parliament (MP) Zac Goldsmith by 1310143 votes to 994614. Khan assumed the office on 9 May 2016.

The Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion (DIPP) under Union Ministry of Commerce & Industry permitted 100% foreign direct investment (FDI) into asset reconstruction companies (ARCs) through automatic route.

UN launches Multi-Partner Trust Fund for Zika virus response
United Nations (UN) on 6 May 2016 announced the establishment of the UN Zika Response Multi-Partner Trust Fund (MPTF) to finance critical unfunded priorities in the response to the Zika outbreak.
The establishment of the fund was announced by UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.
Gujarat government accords minority status to Jain community
Gujarat Government on 7 May 2016 accorded minority status to the Jain community by issuing a government resolution (GR) to this effect.
The decision to accord the minority status to the Jain community was taken by Chief Minister Anandiben Patel.

Switzerland honours Yash Chopra with Bronze statue
Switzerland government on 4 May 2016 honoured the late bollywood film maker Yash Chopra with a special statue.
The bronze statue of Yash Chopra which weighed about 250 kilos was inaugurated by his wife Pamela Chopra and daughter-in-law Rani Mukerjee.
ICICI Bank signs MoU with New Development Bank of BRICS
ICICI Bank on 6 May 2016 signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the New Development Bank (NDB) to establish a strategic partnership in the areas of bond issuances, co-financing, treasury management and human resources.
Pakistan won 2016 Asia Kabaddi Championship Cup
Defending Champion Pakistan on 6 May 2016 won the Asian Kabaddi Championship 2016 (Circle Style) that held at Wah Cantonment in Pakistan. It defeated India by 19 points.
Pakistan achieved 50 points against 31 by India in the final of the tournament. It is second successive win for Pakistan in the Asian Kabaddi title as they won it in 2012.
PCB appoints Mickey Arthur as Pakistan’s head coach
The Pakistan Cricket Board on 6 May 2016 appointed Mickey Arthur as head coach of Pakistan Cricket Team.
He succeeded Waqar Younis, who resigned after Pakistan’s early exit from the World T20 tournament.
Before this appointment, Arthur coached South Africa from 2005 to 2010, and Australia from 2011 to 2013.
Bombay HC decriminalises beef possession, upholds ban on slaughter of bulls, bullocks in Maharashtra
The Bombay High Court on 6 May 2016 upheld the ban on slaughter of bulls and bullocks in Maharashtra indicating that consumption of beef will remain banned across the state.
A division bench of Justices AS Oka and SC Gupte, however, struck down provisions that criminalised possession of beef of animals slaughtered outside the state.
Enda Kenny re-elected as Prime Minister of Ireland
Taoiseach Enda Kenny was re-elected as Prime Minister of Ireland on 6 May 2016. Kenny, leader of Fine Gael party, was elected for the post 70 days after a general election which had produced no outright winner.
