Union Cabinet approved signing of MoC between Ministry of Women & Child Development and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation

The Union Cabinet on 4 May 2016 approved the signing of Memorandum of Co-operation (MoC) between Ministry of Women & Child Development (MWCD) and Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF).
The MoC will be signed for the cooperation in Information and Communication Technology Enabled Real Time Monitoring (ICT-RTM) of Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) and other related technical matters.

Lok Sabha passed the Compensatory Afforestation Fund Bill, 2015

Lok Sabha on 3 May 2016 passed the Compensatory Afforestation Fund bill, 2015 that seeks to establish setting up of a National Compensatory Afforestation Fund and also a State Compensatory Afforestation Fund.
The bill paves the way for unlocking of nearly 41000 crore rupees earmarked for forest land which is lying unspent.

US Navy tested world’s largest unmanned surface vessel, Sea Hunter

United States of America (US) Navy on 2 May 2016 tested the world’s largest unmanned surface vessel named Sea Hunter in San Diego.
It is a self-driving 132-foot ship able to travel up to 10000 nautical miles on its own to hunt for stealthy submarines and underwater mines.

President Pranab Mukherjee conferred 63rd National Film Awards

President Pranab Mukherjee on 3 May 2016 conferred National film awards for the year 2015 in various categories at the 63rd National Film Awards Function held at Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.
The President also conferred 2015 Dada Saheb Phalke Award to Manoj Kumar.

Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics for scientists detecting Gravitational Wave

The Selection Committee of the Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics chaired by Edward Witten announced a Special Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics on 3 May 2016.
The prize recognizes the scientists and engineers who contributed to the momentous detection of gravitational waves. The detection was announced on 11 February 2016.

 

BHEL commissioned 600 MW thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh

Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) on 3 May 2016 commissioned 600 mega watts (MW) coal-based thermal power plant in Madhya Pradesh.
The unit was commissioned at the 1×600 MW Jhabua Thermal Power Project (TPP) located in Seoni district in Madhya Pradesh.

India’s GDP to grow at 7.5% for 2016-17

International Monetary Fund (IMF) in its April 2016 Regional Economic Outlook for Asia and the Pacific forecast retained India’s growth rate at 7.5 percent for the year 2016.
The IMF report titled Regional Economic Outlook: Asia and Pacific, Building on Asia’s Strengths during Turbulent Times said that this growth momentum is expected to be underpinned by private consumption, which has benefited from lower energy prices.

Kishore Biyani appointed as Managing Director of Bharti Retail

Future Group’s Chief Executive Kishore Biyani on 3 May 2016 was appointed Managing Director (MD) of Bharti Retail. The move is a part of a restructuring plan to execute the merger of Future Group with Bharti Retail, which was announced in 2015.

Mark Selby won World Snooker Championship

England’s world number one Mark Selby on 2 May 2016 won World Championship title of Snooker. In the final match played in Sheffield, Selby from Leicester defeated China’s Ding Junhui 18-14.

A group of researchers from University of Cambridge researchers have built the world’s smallest working engine. The research was published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America (PNAS) on 2 May 2016.

Australian entrepreneur Craig Steven Wright on 2 May 2016 publicly identified himself as the creator of Bitcoin, digital cryptocurrency. He claimed to be the real person behind the pseudonym Satoshi Nakamoto, the creator of Bitcoin, a claim that is disputed within the Bitcoin community.

Sameer Chadha appointed as Partner and CEO of KPMG India

Sameer Chadha was on 3 May 2016 appointed as the partner and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of KPMG’s offshore arm in India. Chadha joined KPMG Global Services (KGS) from Barclays Shared Services, where he was the Chief Executive Officer.
